Regional Centre for Banat Heritage – Concordia of the City Museum Vrsac has organized the exhibition “Traces of the Past” that presents use of aerial photography in archaeological research. The exhibition is part of an international project ArchaeoLandscapes Europe, in which 61 institutions from Europe, Australia and United States of America took part.
The exhibition was opened by Predrag Novaković, PhD, professor of the University Ljubljana that was part of the project team.
Aerial photography has been applied in archaeological research since the mid-twentieth century. It represents more affordable way of establishing and documenting archaeological sites then expensive excavations. Collecting data about the Earth’s surface from a distance – so called remote sensing, exists in several different modalities, from simple aerial photographs to complex satellite records. This exhibition presents some of the main methods and also advantages in usage of the remote sensing in archaeology.
The exhibition is organized thankfully to the long-term cooperation of the City Museum Vršac and University of Ljubljana on a joint multidisciplinary project “Revision excavations of the site Vatin – Bela bara”. The Project has been supported by Serbian Ministry of Culture and Media. Project director is Dragan Jovanović, MA, senior curator of the Museum, while head of the Slovenian team is Predrag Novaković, PhD from the University of Ljubljana.
